An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a non invasive test (meaning you dont have to put anything into the body) that measures the electrical activity of the heart. You put these wee stickers (or electrodes as they are called on the wards) in 12 places around the torso, most of which is around the heart area, and along your 5th rib on the left side and one on each wrist and ankle.
An ECHO or echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. This is much more in depth investigaion that show pictures of the heart muscle, the heart chambers, and structures within the heart such as the valves. A probe will be placed on your mums chest onto lubricating jelly (just the same as our ultrasounds for our babies) is put on your mums chest so the probe makes good contact with the skin. Pulses of ultrasound are sent from the probe through the skin towards your mums heart. The ultrasound waves then echo (‘bounce back’) from the heart and various structures in the heart. It helps to see if there is any problems with the valves or any other kind of heart disease.
